West Virginia Mountaineers Retire Pat White's Jersey

The West Virginia Mountaineers will retire Pat White's No. 5 jersey this fall, honoring the college football legend's achievements as a player and coach.

What happened?

Pat White played for the Mountaineers from 2004-08 and is widely considered the greatest player in program history.

He is currently an assistant quarterbacks coach and assistant to head coach Rich Rodriguez.

Why it matters for West Virginia Mountaineers

White's jersey retirement is a testament to his impact on the program, with athletics director Wren Baker saying he "elevated our program and his teammates to greatness".

What comes next?

The Mountaineers' next game is against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on September 5, 2026.

Pat White finished his West Virginia career with over 6,000 passing yards and 4,480 rushing yards.

He had 103 total touchdowns in three years with the Mountaineers.

Rich Rodriguez said White "was a great player and a great leader in our program, and he was a dominant force in college football for four years".

White led the Mountaineers to their best season in program history in 2007, ranking as high as No. 2 in the nation.

The Mountaineers were one win away from a spot in the BCS National Championship Game that year.

Wren Baker praised White's legacy, saying "his success has been documented and appreciated by his teammates, national media and college football fans all over the world".

White is a three-time First Team All-Big East selection and two-time Big East Offensive Player of the Year.

He is now being immortalized in Morgantown as the legend he is.

The jersey retirement ceremony will be held at a home game to be determined later this summer.
